Real Impact
The Friends of Cooch’s Bridge Historic Site have made a lasting impact by securing funding, advocating for preservation, and promoting historical education. Through strategic partnerships with the Delaware Division of Historic and Cultural Affairs, we have successfully:
Preservation & Research
✔ Battlefield Archaeology – Expanded our understanding of the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge through archaeological discoveries.
✔ Oral History Interviews – Captured firsthand accounts from the Cooch family and other key figures.
✔ African American Heritage Database – Documented the contributions of African Americans connected to Cooch’s Bridge Historic Site.
✔ Indigenous History Research – Sponsored studies into the Indigenous communities that once lived in the region.

Community & Cultural Engagement
✔ Signature Events – Hosted programs on the battle’s impact, historic foodways, and African American history.
✔ Award-Winning Music Commissions – Sponsored the song Lightning in a Bottle and a suite of concert works by Jonathan W. Whitney.
✔ Public Trail System Feasibility Study – Partnered with New Castle County and the State of Delaware to explore a historic trail connection.
Advocacy & Site Restoration
✔ Preservation Efforts – Successfully reduced proposed roadwork that would have encroached on the historic site.
✔ Visitors Center Concept Development – Led the early planning stages for a future visitors center.
✔ Historic Building Repairs – Completed urgent restorations to structures at the Cooch Family Homestead.

Wonderful park to see history. When you get a nice day go out and explore.

I've never witnessed such lively and resounding conversation around history. It's great to see traditional approaches meet newer, creative approaches in such a dynamic way.
